Adda Quinn, founder of EnviroHorse, blends science, equitation and environmentalism

At its 19th presentation of its "Horseperson/Citizen of the Year" Award, the members of the Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County and their spouses were proud to bestow the award to Adda Quinn of Belmont for her tireless advocacy for horse trails and horse keeping in both the Bay Area and across the nation.  Quinn's non-profit organization, "Envirohorse", has become a nationally recognized clearinghouse for scientific information regarding the impact of horses on the environment (and it's all good news!).  Representing equestrian interests, Quinn serves on numerous county environmental committees, trail committees and on the boards of several equine advocacy groups.  The Mounted Patrol is pleased to honor Quinn's efforts and to champion her motto: "Every horse person...a volunteer!"

Adda Quinn and her horse, Cocoa

Although this award is for Adda, there's always a story behind the horse.  And with horse people, that "behind the scene's story" is usually about their horse.  Here's some information on Cocoa.

Cocoa is the barn name for a 12 year-old Missouri Fox Trotter with the registered name of "Twentieth Century Fox".  Cocoa was given to Adda and her husband, George Sublett, by Joe and Barbara Amos of Woodside.  In Adda's words, he's a gelding with the need for speed.  He has a natural 8 mph walk that makes him difficult to ride with many other horses, even his Quarter Horse stable mate Flight, a 16 year old mare that serves as Adda's other trail horse.  Cocoa is fast and unpredictable making him a handful to ride.  No idle relaxation when riding this big boy!  He does not like to be in large groups of trail horses and loves to be in the lead.  He can do a soft lope to other horses' extended trots and his gaits are THE best!

Well, as editor of this piece, I can add my own comments about Cocoa.  Gaited horses, like Cocoa, are a breed unto themselves and having a few Tennessee Walking Horses myself, I can concur with Adda that these gaited horses are the ride of your life!  They are fast with tons of stamina, have pronounced individual personalities and most of all, are extremely smooth.  Adda is clearly in love with her horses and has what we commonly call "the horse gene".  - Ed.
