A
little about the Rodeo...
The
largest annual community event in the Portola Valley/Woodside area is once again
coming shortly, drawing viewers and participants from all over Northern
California. The Mounted Patrol of
San Mateo County (MPSMC) proudly presents the 52nd annual Woodside Junior NorCal Rodeo
in a park-like setting. This
rodeo started over a half-century ago in La Honda, California, and this year we are
planning a fabulous gala event with many special attractions, including, but not
limited to, an extra large petting zoo and
the ever-famous pig scramble open to all children attending.
The rodeo is the largest fund
raiser for the Mounted Patrol which is a major contributor to both local and
national groups. The benefactors of the Patrol efforts include but are not limited to: The Sheriff's Star Program,
which provides at-risk children with positive examples and alternatives to
less-than-optimistic surroundings; the National Center for Equine Facilitated
Therapy, where physical therapy on horseback is provided to severely handicapped
children; St. Jude's Children's Hospital, which provides treatment and research
in pediatric cancer and other childhood catastrophic diseases, and other
organizations benefiting the community.
We normally host approximately
3000 + spectators. We hope you will once
again provide the much needed media exposure which is extremely important to
inform the community. This rodeo is of special interest due to the fact that the
contestants are ages 18 years and under and will perform most of the events
usually associated with any professional rodeo. The rodeo will be open to the public at 8:00AM (some
qualifying events start at 8:00AM with the colors being presented around noon
followed by the main events). Beverages,
breakfast, and lunch will be served throughout the day.
This
year's Rodeo Queen is Katie Lewine, 14, the daughter of Mike and Patty Lewine of Redwood
City, CA. She is completing her freshman year at the Woodside Priory
School. An avid horsewoman, she participates in the SMCHA Western Riding
Clinics, Mounted Patrol Playdays and does numerous trail rides. She has
completed Parelli Natural Horsemanship Level 2. Her horse is Go Jo Passer
(barn name of Jo), a 14 year old Appendix Quarter Horse gelding. In the
rodeo, she will be riding Rocky, a Quarter Horse/Morgan cross gelding owned by
Mounted Patrol Member Kevin Daley and wife Nan and daughter, Colleen.
The 2002 Rodeo Princesses are Jordan Aboud and
Brianna Garcia. Jordan, 14, is also completing her freshman year at
Woodside Priory School. She participates in numerous horse shows and is an
avid trail rider. In the rodeo, she will be riding War Chant (barn name of
Chant), a 15 year old Quarter Horse gelding, owned by Mounted Patrol First
Lieutenant Art Mintz. Brianna, 13, is completing 7th grade at MIT in
Redwood City. Her horsemanship covers Mounted Patrol Playdays, rodeo
events and trail rides. In the rodeo, she will be riding Chocolate Chip
(barn name of Chip), owned by Patrol member Mike Harper. Chip is a 20+
year old Tennessee Walker bay with a white star that is Search and Rescue
certified and has been used as a Fields Trials horse in the past.
Congratulations to all three of these fine young equestrian ladies.
In
addition to the above mentioned attractions, this year's rodeo will have two professional drill teams
presenting the colors and performing during the Grand Entry. The
California Cowgirls and the Cow Palace Cowgirls will deliver a performance that
you won't want to miss.
Admission
is $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 18 years and under, and free for
children under the age of 5. Parking
is included with admission.
A
special reminder: Don't miss the
Pre- Rodeo Dinner Dance taking place Wednesday, July 3rd. The dance will star the well-known recording artists,
California Cowboys. The clubhouse
will be open at 6pm for this dinner dance.
The cost is $18 for adults, $8 for children eight years and under, and
$10
for music only. Please feel free to
contact me at 650-851-8300 or www.mpsmc.org for further information or
promotional material.
